About Us

The Business Valuation Association (BVA) was started by individuals including Professors Don Shannon and Joe Blanco (DePaul University Graduate School of Business) in an effort to educate themselves and others in the field of business valuation. Using their industry contacts, they were able to persuade speakers to present their ideas to the Association’s members. From these beginnings, the BVA has expanded to an organization comprising more than 200 members in and outside the Chicago area. We are a nonprofit entity that depends on the continued efforts of its members to sustain itself. The officers are entrusted with scheduling, organizing, and presenting six (6) or more meetings per year.

Purpose of the Organization
The BVA’s goal is to promote professionalism among business valuation practitioners through continuing education. The goal of the officers of the BVA is to provide the membership with provocative and timely presentations by people recognized as experts in their particular field. The educational schedule is presented between the months of September through May.

Special Forums
Periodically, the BVA, in conjunction with other organizations, sponsors seminars and meetings dedicated to topical issues. During the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 program years, we hosted extremely successful presentations by Aswath Damodaran - Professor of Finance, Stern School of Business, New York University. Annually, we co-sponsor a program on the Capital Markets that has been very popular.

At each meeting, members and non-members from the fields of finance, banking, law and accounting meet to network with each other and learn. Contacts made through the Association have proven invaluable to members.

CPE Credits
The learning opportunities afforded through membership have been recognized by the accounting and appraisal professions as qualifying for CPE credit. We present topics that are new and relevant to issues faced in our practices and which expand our knowledge into new areas of practice development. Members can earn eight or more hours of CPE credit annually.
